Fyodor Dostoyevsky (1821-1881). Russian novelist. Of the most outstanding and influential writers of modern literature. Dostoyevsky was born in Moscow, the son of a doctor and the second of eight children. His works explore human psychology in the troubled political, social, and spiritual atmosphere of 19th-century Russia. His 1864 novella Notes from Underground is considered to be one of the first works of existentialist literature.
