The 2014 elections could be the pivotal turning point for democracy in South Africa. Several signs indicate that electoral change is under way, creating uncertainty about the election results - the increase in the number of born-frees; a noticeable apathy among many eligible voters; and rising social discontent. Although loyalties towards the ANC remained strong during the first decade of democracy, the 2009 election showed a decline in support for the ANC; and it is also being challenged by several newcomers, including Mamphela Ramphele's Agang and Julius Malema's Economic Freedom Fighters. All this makes South Africa's fifth democratic election an intensely interesting and momentous event, which this book will help explain and analyse.

Collette Schulz-Herzenberg is a Postdoctoral Research Fellow in the Centre for Social Science Research (CSSR) at the University of Cape Town. She has worked for the Institute for Security Studies, the Institute for Democracy in South Africa (Idasa), and as an elections analyst for the South African Broadcasting Corporation during elections. Roger Southall is Professor Emeritus in Sociology, University of the Witwatersrand and, during 2013, Van Zyl Slabbert Visiting Professor in Politics and Sociology, University of Cape Town. Previously he was Executive Director/Distinguished Research Fellow at the Human Sciences Research Council, and before that Professor of Political Studies at Rhodes University. He was the co-editor of Zunami: The South African General Election of 2009 (published by Jacana).
