The short winter's day was drawing to its close, and twilight, the steel and silver twilight of a windless frost, falling in throbs of clear dusk over an ice-bound land. The sun, brilliant but cold as an electric lamp, had not in all the hours of its shining been of strength sufficient to melt the rime congealed during the night before, and each blade of grass on the lawns, each spray and sprig on the bare hedgerows, had remained a spear of crystals minute and innumerable. The roofs of house and cottage sparkled and glim mered as with a soft internal lustre in the light of the moon, which had risen an hour before sun set, and the stillness of great cold, a thing more palpably motionless than even the stricken noon day of the south, gripped all in its vice. Silent, steadfast lights had sprung up and multiplied in the many-windowed village, but not a bird chirped nor dog barked. Labourers were home from the iron of the frozen fields, doors were shut, and the huge night was at hand.

"Mammon and Co." is bright, piquant, and entertaining from beginning to end; full of humorous sayings and witty things spoken by men and women who are merry and captivating.'
Spectator. - 'Hooleyism is not the only target of Mr. Benson's satire. He also deals with the fashionable craze for gambling in private houses and with dangerous flirtations, and the book is at once far truer to life and far better calculated to open people's eyes to their follies than Ouida's highly-coloured impeachment of London society in "The Masserenes." It is a clever and interesting novel.'
World. - 'To say only that the book is amusing is not only insufficient, but also misleading. It is a very serious exposé by typical figures of certain sides of our social life, with illustrative recurrences to flagrant scandals in the worlds of fashion and finance under the present conditions of fusion. The skill with which those typical figures are drawn and the originality of the types are remarkable.'

The repartee and rattle of the "smart set" are the genuine thing, and his own pretty conceits and happy little audacities of turn are not too forced. One of the best things in the book is the composite character of the promoter. Decidedly he is a creation.'

It has all the smartness of "Dodo," with a more interesting plot, a better grasp of character, and a more wholesome point in its satire.
