Excerpt: ... THE STATE OF THE PROTESTANT RELIGION IN GERMANY; IN A SERIES OF DISCOURSES, PREACHED BEFORE THE UNIVERSITY OF CAMBRIDGE, BY THE REV. HUGH JAMES ROSE, &C. &c. TRANSLATED FROM THE ENGLISH. LEIPSIC, 1826. As this calumny upon the Theology of Germany, from being translated into the language of the country, may now be read by every one, it becomes necessary to examine the charge minutely, and to hold it up in its true colours, lest it should be abused by Mystics and Zealots, not only to decry our system generally, but to denounce to Statesmen and others, who are only imperfectly acquainted with such subjects, a number of distinguished and highly esteemed Theologians as the enemies of religion. As discourses preached to the University of Cambridge, these now before us, are nothing more than a proof that the author has made a cursory visit to Germany, and that he has met with things in that country, different from what they are in the High English Church. Abstractedly speaking, it is of little consequence to us as Germans, whether an Englishman strongly prejudiced, should have viewed us imperfectly or unfairly, or should through wilfulness misrepresent, or from weakness misconceive us. We allow him to compliment as much as he pleases, at our expence, his colleagues and superiors at Cambridge, and we do not envy him that English satisfaction of demonstrating to his friends, the proposition already admitted by them, that there is no country more perfect than England, nor any Church more admirable than the High Episcopalian one, with its thirty-nine articles and tedious Liturgy.
