The Synagogues of India: Architecture, History and Communities - Softcover

A 150-page book dedicated to the more than forty-five standing synagogues in India that serve (or once served) the country's distinct communities of Jews: the Bene Israel, Cochini, Baghdadi, Bene Ephraim, B'nei Menashe, Reform and Independent groups. The book includes a history and description of each of the communities and a written account with photographs and images of every synagogue found throughout India. These are buildings, dating from the mid-16th through the early 21st centuries, which range tremendously in scale, planning and style, and they can be found in urban, suburban and rural settings. There is also a chapter in the book on recent synagogue restorations, a section of "What's in an Indian Synagogue?," a list of the synagogues and their addresses, and a comprehensive bibliography.
