Frank Andrews grew up in Manhattan, Kansas. Educated as a scientist, he graduated from Kansas State University and received a Ph.D. from Harvard. He has studied at several major universities in the United States and Europe, has written several books on chemical physics, and has been awarded many honors for his scientific work. Since 1967, he has been a professor at the University of California, Santa Cruz, where he has been honored with eight major teaching awards, including the 1991 Distinguished Teaching Award, a tribute bestowed by university alumni to a faculty member whose contribution to undergraduate education "has put the campus in the academic spotlight." He has also taught at Dartmouth, Harvard, University of Wisconsin, and Stanford.

Since coming to UCSC, though he has carried the full teaching and research responsibilities of a tenured professor in physical chemistry, his primary field of study and teaching has been general problem solving. Relying upon his background as a physical scientist, he searches for ideas and techniques that have power to affect people's lives. He has brought his skills to challenges like psychological unblocking, applying science to discern human values, and learning to love life regardless of circumstances. In this work he has read over a thousand books, attended and led thousands of classes and workshops, and counseled thousands of students. This publication is his first book outside the realm of physical chemistry. He writes about loving because he is convinced that it is the most important topic there is.
