Largely impoverished and fiercely insular, this final trickle of the last wave of immigration maintained rigid borders. Unwilling or unable to assimilate, it was a poor hut self- sustaining theocracy, constructed around the religious traditions so lovingly borne from Eastern Europe. At Home Only With God is thus a poignant record of the lives and faces of the pious. These photographs, taken in the subjects' homes and synagogues, record the habits and customs, the rigors and joys of deep devotional observance. - Here are striking images made by Arnold Eagle in the 1930s: bearded scholars, men at prayer, boys in cheder, mothers lighting the shahhat candles, families celebrating the Passover seder. Here, too, are the mean streets and cramped lodgings where peddlers, laborers, and pushcart vendors struggled to raise their families; and also the old folks' institutions - final havens in a community that took care of its own.
