It includes more than one hundred fifty sculptures in wood, bronze, stone, plaster, and porcelain by thirty-three artists, as well as many related graphic works. Among the artists represented are Barlach, Beckmann, Heckel, Kirchner, Kollwitz, Lehmbruck, Schiele, and-Schmidt-Rottluff, as well as lesser-known artists from the second wave of German Expressionism, such as Garbe, Henning, Karsch, Seiwert, and Voll. Essays discussing the sculpture of each artist have been contributed by noted German and American scholars. Translations of seven contemporary arti-cles on sculpture by important Expression^ ist critics and artists appear here for the first time, and documentary photographs of both extant and destroyed works-used throughout the catalogue-further enhance appreciation and understanding of the sculpture and its original context.
