The Westbury to Weymouth Line - Hardcover

The railway from Westbury to Weymouth, via Frome, Castle Cary, Yeovil and Dorchester, runs through attractive scenery for much of its route. A sparse population and lack of industry for most of its length has meant that it has never been particularly prosperous, although up to the late 1950s and the increase in car ownership, the seasonal holiday traffic to Weymouth was often heavy. Dating back to the days of the "Railway Mania" and the "battle of the gauges" in the 1840s and '50s it has, nevertheless, had an interesting history. The author worked over the route as a fireman in the later days of steam on British Railways and has combined personal footplate recollections with extensive historical research to produce a detailed and fascinating account of this attractive cross-country route.
