"A masterful survey and exposition of a broad range of literature on the social sciences. This book . . . shows Bernstein's extraordinary gift for interpretation. He takes author after author and deftly lays out the essentials of their arguments, relating them to others, and gradually developing a coherent picture of a whole realm of discourse. . . . A contribution that is vitally needed."-Political Theory "Anyone who wants to understand the profound changes that have overtaken the social disciplines in the course of the past decade ought to read Bernstein's book. He examines an extraordinarily wide range of theories with the most scrupulous care, in each case adding a series of extremely perceptive criticisms."-Quentin Skinner, New York Review of Books "Richard Bernstein is uniquely gifted among our contemporaries to bring into focus the mutual relevance of highly disparate strands in modern social and political theory. We are not likely to have a better work in the field."-Alasdair MacIntyre "Valuable . . . for identifying the requirements for all rational life."-Religious Studies Review

Einband berieben und an einigen Stellen etwas beschabt, leichte Randläsuren, Buchrücken lichtbedingt ausgeblichen, sonst gut und ohne Anstreichungen / Binding rubbed and a little scuffed in some places, light marginal tears, spine light faded, otherwise good and without annotations. - Contents Acknowledgments Introduction PART I Empirical Theory PART II Language, Analysis, and Theory PART III The Phenomenological Alternative PART IV The Critical Theory of Society Notes Bibliography Index of Names Index of Subjects / This inquiry into the nature of social and political theory grew out of the crisis that erupted in the 1960's when the social sciences were attacked as a disguised form of ideology supporting the status quo. With extraordinary insight Bernstein explores this controversy which raised fundamental issues about human nature and social knowledge. He argues for a critical restructuring of social and political theory. Bernstein criticizes those social scientists who claim that their discipline differs only in degree from the sophisticated natural sciences, and who claim that there is a sharp distinction between empirical and normative theory. Developing an immanent critique, Bernstein argues that an adequate social and political theory must be empirical, interpretative, and critical. After examining the case for a naturalistic understanding of social science by concentrating on the theories of a limited number of highly influential contributors (Merton, Smelser, and Nagel), he analyzes three movements that have challenged these theories: Anglo-American thinkers influenced by the later Wittgenstein (Winch, Louch, Taylor, Pitkin), phenomenologists (Husserl and Schutz), and the Frankfurt School, including Jürgen Habermas. Rejecting simplistic either/or positions, Bernstein seeks to integrate from each group what he takes to be sound and to reject what is false and inadequate. He envisions a new universe of discourse and experience within which political and social theory with a practical intent can flourish. In THE RESTRUCTURING OF SOCIAL AND POLITICAL THEORY Richard J. Bernstein extends the work that he began in PRAXIS AND ACTION: Contemporary Theories of Human Activity, also available in paperback from the University of Pennsylvania Press.
