This text presents 9 of Corey Christiansen’s popular books in one comprehensive edition. Many of the essential concepts of jazz guitar are presented here in an easy to understand fashion. Part 1 teaches jazz lines and includes chapters on Digital Patterns, Guide Tones and Targeting. All examples are presented with fretboard diagrams, standard notation, and tab. Part 2 is titled “Killer Chords” and presents the basics of chord construction. Many chord voicing techniques for guitar are presented. Triads, seventh chords, chords with tensions and embellishments and their inversions are taught using closed positions, Drop-2, Drop-3, Drop-2 and -4 and quartal harmony voicings. Presented in standard notation and tab. Part 3 presents comprehensive warm-up and technical exercises. Studies begin at the most basic level and move to an advanced level. This chapter gives guitarists the information needed to continue constructing technical exercises for a lifetime. Part 4 presents accompaniment patterns for a wide variety of pop styles. Included are folk, rock/blues, country/bluegrass, jazz, and some Latin styles including bossa nova and samba. Many basic fingerstyle accompaniment patterns are taught in a simple manner. Materials are presented with rhythmic notation and string numbers only. Contemporary music begins and ends with the blues. This chapter presents alternate changes and many chord substitutions for the blues in a way that allows them to be transposed into any key. Part 7 teaches jazz guitar comping. The idea, when comping, is to make the other musicians comfortable while they play and to help their solos feel "complete." This book gives the guitarist a number of chord shapes and rhythms that can be used when comping in the style of Freddie Green and in bebop and later styles. There are also blues progressions and an etude to practice applying the concepts. Part 8 is titled “Killer Turnarounds” and presents a wealth of information about playing over the last two measures of jazz tunes. The method taught systematically breaks down the harmonic structures frequently found at the end of tunes and provides melodic ideas as well as harmonic ideas that will help improvisers sound like seasoned professionals.
