Bragg has long been the UK's foremost protest singer. Born of working-class origins in a poor suburb of London, he was an enthusiastic participator in punk, but rose to fame in the 80's, when he enjoyed a string of chart hits with his witty, acerbic, and unabashedly leftist protest pop. He was also chief organizer of the groundbreaking Red Wedge project, which saw major British rock stars unite and tour in support of the Labour Party's 1987 general election campaign, as well as opposing the program of pit closures which led to 1984's British miners' strike. It's easy to see why Nora sees him as the spiritual heir to Guthrie.
