The rural areas of Britain, Europe and the developed world are undergoing massive changes, with increasing concern about productivity, agricultural methods and environmental policy. Michael Winter is Professor of Rural Economy and Society in the Countryside and Community Research Unit at Cheltenham and Gloucester College.
