Schwarzlose in Newspapers: A Reference Guide presents a core' of the literature (books and monographs) that either competently summarize major newspaper topics or spotlight significant or interesting aspect of newspapering.' Both substance and availability were criteria for selection. All titles are in English and about American newspapers. Nine bibliographic essays cover topics in the history of the American newspaper from its beginning to the 1980s. The first three chapters are history-oriented in that they deal with the histories of newspapers and the people that worked for them before the twentieth century and in the twentieth century, respectively.
