John Henry Newman: Meditations and Devotions - Hardcover

These meditations and devotions have been selected by Ian Ker from the collection gathered together and published after Newman's death by his secretary and friend William Neville of the Birmingham Oratory. Often surprisingly simple and direct, they combine the traditional language of Catholic devotion with Newman's own distinct voice. The bulk of the material is made up of meditations on Christian doctrine, with a selection of his devotions to Mary. Also included is his profound but delightful `A Short Road to Perfection', which expresses vividly Newman's guiding conviction that we have no more to do to love and obey God than to perform our ordinary duties well.

IAN KER is Senior Research Fellow at St Benet's Hall, Oxford, and has taught both English literature and theology at universities in Britain and the United States. He is the author and editor of more than twenty books on Newman, including John Henry Newman: A Biography (OUP), acclaimed as not only the best "life" of Newman, but one of the best biographies of any great nineteenth-century writer (Modern Literary Review) and as splendid and enthralling a Life as I have had in my hands for many a day (The Times). His most recent books are The Catholic Revival in English Literature, 1845-1961 and Mere Catholicism. His life of G. K. Chesterton will be published next year.
