Buchbeschreibung Zustand: Sehr gut. 156 p. : ill. (chiefly col.), maps ; mit zahlr. farbigen Abbildungen, Zustand: geringe Gebrauchs- u. Lagerspuren, sehr gutes Exemplar. Text / Sprache: Englisch , paintings by Richard A. Smolicz ; text by W. Watson Sharp , Far too often the records of historical houses Australia have dwelt on the grandiose, especially the replicas of Georgian mansions left behind in England. But the real pioneer homes were built by the battlers, the underprivileged settlers - many of them escaped convicts - who ventured into the unknown wilderness and carved holdings for themselves out of the virgin and inhospitable bush. The houses were rarely designed. They just grew from the primitive materials and simple tools that were at hand. Yet most achieved pleasant proportions and a sense of harmony. There seemed no limit to the range of building materials used - timber slabs, mostly vertical but occasionally horizontal between posts, handmade bricks laid in clay, stone (rarely dressed), saplings, wattle and daub. Here is a fascinating historical and architectural account of these pioneer dwellings, together with the very earliest Australian shelters built by the Aborigines The humble churches which inevitably accompanied the early settlements, as the pioneers desired the patterns of worship of their homelands, are also examined. Richard A. Smolicz's superb paintings bring these rustic buildings, many of which have now fallen into complete ruin or disappeared beneath the waters of new reservoirs, to life. Dwellings and churches from all parts of Australia - from Ebenezer in New South Wales to Roper Bar in the Northern Territory to historic Richmond and Stanley in Tasmania - are pictured and described here as a unique record of Australia's heritage. 3687A ISBN 0207147264 Sprache: Englisch Gewicht in Gramm: 860 quer 29 x 21 cm, gebundene Ausgabe mit Original-Umschlag, Artikel-Nr. 27762
