Most crucially he explores the politics of the decision to delay invasion until 1944 and its terrible repercussions. For if the Western Allies had decided to invade in 1943 John Grigg believes their triumph might have been greater, and the scale of human tragedy vastly reduced.

John Grigg first became famous when, after criticising the Queen's advisers, he resigned his peerage as Lord Altrincham in 1957. He is the author of many distinguished books, including THE YOUNG LLOYD GEORGE (1973), LLOYD GEORGE: THE PEOPLE'S CHAMPION (1978), and LLOYD GEORGE: FROM PEACE TO WAR (1985). The second of these won the Whitbread Prize for biography, the third the Wolfson Prize for history.
