Buchbeschreibung Hardcover. Zustand: Fine. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: fine. First edition. First edition, first printing. A fine, fresh, unread copy. Hardcover. 450 pp. with index. Illustrated with photographs. Biography of one of the most notorious figuers of World War I, a woman whose name is still familiar today, Margaretha Zelle, better known as Mata Hari. The Dutch born Margaretha was from a broken family, was shuttled off to relatives after her mother's death, married a much older man despite her family's warning, a man who, after giving her syphilis took her to the Dutch East Indies where the marriage exploded after the death of a child. She fled the marriage and reinvented herself as "Mata Hari", a scandalously sensual dancer with a East Indies name and an "oriental" aura about her novel "artistic " dances. Re urning to Europe at the outbreak of World War I, she became the mistress of many senior Allied officers and government officials and traveled widely. Was she a spy? In 1917 she was arrested on epionage charges and less than a year later was tried and executed. Artikel-Nr. E29153
